Attention Creatives: Ignore Everybody.

I’ve been meaning to post this review for a while since I very much enjoyed it, so here we go: Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity by Hugh MacLeod (gapingvoid.com). This is a great, fast read for anyone in the creative field as Hugh explores marketing, life, ideas, avoiding crowds, uniqueness, and navigating your way to success in whatever it is that you truly love doing. In Hugh’s case, as a young copywriter in New York City, he began doodling on the backs of business cards while sitting at the bar. Not until years later did they become a cartooning success for their insight, wit, and humor. Check out some work here. I think what really connected me with this book was the praise of creativity in it’s purest form–for fun; not money. A few of my favorite lessons were:

– The idea doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be yours.
– If your plan depends on on suddenly being “discovered” by some big shot, your plan will probably fail
– Don’t try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds all together
– Nobody cares. Do it for yourself
– The best way to get approval is to not need it
– Remain frugal

Or as he best puts it in the end, “Work hard. Keep at it. Live simply and quietly. Remain humble. Stay positive. Create your own luck. Be nice. Be polite.”

His attitude and outlook on creativity and staying true to yourself is truly inspiring. Go read the book and check out his site!
